20th Century

My 1st year exam project. DR2 (a daughter channel of the Danish national television broadcaster, DR) is making a fictive documentary series about the 20th century, for which a programme identity is needed.

For this assignment, we were free to put our own spin on the concept of the series. Since I find there to be plenty of run-of-the-mill documentaries about the 20th century already, I chose to let this one focus on the people of the 20th century, and — more importantly — information about them which isn’t common knowledge. Thus depicting compromising information about the people regarded highly in our collective memory, as well as sympathetic information about those widely regarded as villains.

As for the programme identity, I wanted it to be fresh and eye-catching, while still staying true to the general feeling of DR2. With the aforementioned concept in mind, I created an identity heavily inspired by the posters for the film “The Usual Suspects” as well as mugshots in general. The identity consists of a logotype, promotional posters and DVD covers.

Logo
  • Poster: Adolf Hitler
  • Poster: Che Guevara
  • Poster: Marilyn Monroe

The signs on the posters read, respectively: “Victim?”, “Terrorist?” and “Genius?”

Posters
  • DVD cover: 1960-1969
  • DVD cover: 1980-1989
  • DVD cover: 1990-1999

Respectively: “Who was the pioneer?”, “Who was superfluous?” and “Who was the media personality?”
